The Tournament organized by Hockey World body FIH (International Hockey Federation) was started in 1979 and held once in four years. The format followed for the event is similar to the one followed in Men’s World cup.
Teams Qualification: National teams which are wishing to take part in the Junior World cup must participate in the respective continental junior championships. Each continent will be given two places and FIH decides which continental federation should be awarded more slots.

Player Qualification: No players should be more than 21 years of age as of 31 December 2013, i.e. all players shall be born after 1 January 1992.

Successful Teams: Pakistan was the winners of the Inaugural edition of the Junior World cup. Germany has been the most successful team with a tally of 5 gold medals and one silver (Three of them was won with the name West Germany).
